Subject-first statements

Put the subject, verb and object in order in a simple statement.

Explained in English5 practice questionsJump to practice ↓

How it works

In a neutral statement beginning with its subject, put the verb after the subject and the object after the verb: who + action + what. This basic order is familiar from English. The subject is already supplied in each exercise, so do not repeat it after the verb. A subject can have more than one word. This lesson practises subject-first statements; questions and statements starting with another phrase come later.

Jag läser en bok. · Vi dricker te.

SwedishFunction
Jag läser en bok.speaker + action + object
Vi dricker te.plural subject + action + object

See it in a sentence

Hon äter bröd.

She eats bread.

Äter follows subject hon; bröd follows the verb as its object.

Min bror läser en bok.

My brother reads a book.

The two-word subject min bror is followed by the finite verb and its object.
