How it works

German nouns have grammatical gender, reflected in nominative definite articles "der/die/das" and indefinite forms such as "ein/eine". The article form also changes with case, so learn each noun together with its gender.

der Mann · die Frau · das Kind · ein Mann · eine Frau · ein Kind

See it in a sentence

Das Buch ist neu. Ich kaufe ein neues Buch.

The book is new. I am buying a new book.

“ein” is the neuter indefinite article with “Buch”; nominative and accusative have the same form here.

Die Lampe ist schön. Das ist eine schöne Lampe.

The lamp is beautiful. This is a beautiful lamp.

“eine” is the feminine indefinite article required by “Lampe”.
