How it works

A yes/no question normally begins with the finite verb, followed by the subject. An information question begins with a W-word, and the finite verb remains in the next constituent position.

finite verb + subject …? · question word + finite verb + subject …?

See it in a sentence

Wohnst du in Berlin?

Do you live in Berlin?

“Wohnst” begins the yes/no question and comes before the subject “du”.

Wo wohnt deine Schwester?

Where does your sister live?

“wohnt” follows the question word “Wo” and comes before its subject.
