Negation with nicht

You will learn to negate a statement with nicht and place it correctly.

Explained in English5 practice questionsJump to practice ↓

How it works

nicht negates a whole statement or a focused element. For neutral clause negation, its position depends on the predicate: it often comes late in the middle field (Ich komme heute nicht) and precedes nonfinite verbs, separable prefixes, or predicate complements (Wir haben den Film nicht gesehen; Anna ist nicht zu Hause). Use kein for an indefinite or articleless noun phrase (Ich habe kein Auto); use nicht with definite, possessive, proper-name, or contrastively focused noun phrases (nicht das Auto; nicht mein Auto; nicht Anna).

Ich komme heute nicht. Anna ist nicht zu Hause.

See it in a sentence

Ich komme heute nicht.

I am not coming today.

“nicht” follows the time phrase and negates the whole statement.

Anna ist nicht zu Hause.

Anna is not at home.

“nicht” precedes the predicative place phrase “zu Hause”.
